The music video: MWANA GWE – KING SAHA

king-saha1

Set back in time, to be exact, sometime in 1975, this video takes us on a journey down the memory lane. King Saha tries to visually narrate his romantic escapades with this one girl. To further augment the back in time scenes, the clothing and the lighting are all customized to the old times. The video starts off with King Saha scribbling some love letter on a typewriter. My disappointment is on the phone used in the video.
And if one takes a closer look, it also becomes clear that the fashion belongs to the sixties not the seventies. The seventies were defined by a total disregard for fashion trends. It was all about breaking the rules, and expressing one’s individuality. Mwana Gwe video doesn’t reflect that, or should we say, it’s that failure to pay attention to detail. Yes there’s that part of a bell-bottom of sorts, but it doesn’t perfectly exhibit that look. Maybe the video director didn’t realize that telling the viewer it’s a seventies video would also set the expectations higher. The video only recovers on the part of the big wig that’s worn by the girl in question.
Going forward, the video follows its set storyline. Even when muted, one will try to pick the message. A phone call to the in-laws, perhaps to pass on his apologies. And as they say, emotions can’t be hidden. The girl forces her way and is able to talk to her first love.
The lovely moments you will enjoy in the video are those wall-portraits of the musical legends. You will also crack a rib on that safari journey scene. King Saha gets off the car and his friends speed off. He’s forced to chase after them as they burst out in laughter. The video ends with King Saha finally getting reunited with his sweetheart.
