If this was a video, the voice over would start something like this, “From the guys of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Lethal Weapon…” Then that would be all it took for people to run to the cinema. The two were quite popular after all. The Nice Guys also has fans, especially those who love crime movies, saying several good things.
The movie is set in the 1970s. Misty Mountains (Telio), a porn star dies in a car crash. However, her aunt seems sure that Misty is alive. So sure in fact that she hires Holland March (Gosling) to look for her. Although March is not keen on taking up the case, his private investigations business is not doing so well. Also, another girl, Amelia (Qualley) who has been missing, seems to have a connection to Misty, so March is desperate and intrigued enough to take it up.
Amelia on the other hand is trying to stay lost. She hires Jackson Healy (Crowe) to scare March away and take him off the case. However, Healy is attacked and questioned about Amelia’s whereabouts. The guys who attack him are known thugs, known for doing the dirty work of questionable people. The attack gets Healy’s spidey sense up. He decides to work with March to get the bottom of what is now clearly more than meets the eye.
Crime, conspiracies, and chemistry are the highlights of this movie. It’s intriguing enough to keep you more than interested. A little hint without offering any spoilers: the porn industry meets environmentalism – I kid not. As for the chemistry, Crowe and Gosling, although they seem like such an unlikely pair on paper, are actually good together. May be it’s the odd pairing. Whatever it is, the two will have you laughing.
While it is a good movie with rave reviews to follow, it might not be as popular with everyone. It is the kind where you need to really listen to fully enjoy it. If you like your entertainment fast and uncomplicated, this won’t cut it. But no doubt this is a good movie.
