When the fundraise drive kicked off about two months ago, Carol Atuhirwe needed Shs270m for her surgery in the United States. This to so many Ugandans is a lot of money and it needed the intervention of sympathisers to help her raise that amount.
Then CEO Magazine’s Muhereza Kyamutetera engineered the Save Carol campaign which started in Kampala and spread to other parts of the country. Ugandans collected up to Shs324.6m. This was raised through a number of activities, including car wash drives and T-shirts sales and other items, as well as contributions from individuals, corporate companies and organisations.
But because the drive collected much more than what she needed, Carol decided to donate the excess Shs54m to the cancer institute in Mulago. The decision was made on Wednesday during Carol’s thanksgiving service at All Saints Cathedral Church in Kampala.
“Thank you Uganda… We are now in final consultations with doctors on the final treatment and travel details as well as final costs. All remaining funds, Atuhirwe Carol has advised be given to Uganda Cancer Institute,” Kyamutetera said on his Facebook wall.
We wish Carol a successful surgery because such a big heart deserves a second chance!
