The car fixer: In 2015, Paul Kirui chose to start up his own car garage. Car Avenue was the name he gave his business and it is all about cars; inspection, consultation and more.
What is the name of your business?
Car Avenue.
Why did you name it that?
Car Avenue sounds unique, simple yet classy.
What exactly do you do at Car Avenue?
We assess and inspect the condition of all the systems and mechanical components of a car and later give a detailed report.
When did you start doing this kind of job?
In 2013, working under my former boss, but at the end of last year I decided to provide private vehicle inspection services.
Where did you get the experience of inspect cars?
I studied automotive and power engineering and I have worked with experienced companies and highly-trained professionals.

How much do you charge to inspect a car?
Inspection charges range between Shs50,000 and Shs100,000, depending on what the client wants. Consultation on hand is free. But these fees work if the car to be inspected is around town (Kampala). Upcountry charges are different.
Where is your garage located?
Our offices are at Dewinton Road, but my workshop is in Kireka. I normally pick my clients’ cars from their offices or homes and return it after inspection.
Why would someone trust you with their car?
Because I am honest and I have a good reputation with my clients. I also work in real time.
Do you have specific types of cars you inspect?
We inspect all types of cars.
What challenges do you face doing this kind of job?
Trouble shooting high tech vehicles is still a challenge because my diagnosis kit does not have some things, but as soon as I get an updated diagnosis kit I will be good to go. The other challenge is that clients want to bargain to Shs20,000, which is very little and depressing.
What type of car is easiest for you to inspect?
Cars with less technology, say a 1995 model Rav 4, which has very few electric components compared to a 2014 model Rav 4.
