The Mac cult has already torn into the latest Steve Jobs movie in terms of getting some facts wrong. That is expected, given how iconic the Apple co-founder was and still is. It would take something short of magic to capture his story in a way that every iUser would find satisfactory, and since we know you can’t please everyone, let’s judge the movie by its artistic impression and not by how close it is to the actual events, even if it is a biopic.
Steve Jobs focuses on three events in Jobs’ professional and personal life. The first period is before the launch of the Apple Macintosh; the second is towards the launch of the NeXT computer, and finally before the launch of the iMac. If you have read any books or articles about Jobs, then you have probably come to the same conclusion as me –Jobs was a complex guy. That is exactly what you get when you watch Jobs (Fassbender) in the movie. From his relationship with his ex Chrisann (Waterston) and her daughter, Lisa (Haney-Jardine), you see a side of him that is easy to dislike. While his conversations with Hoffman (Winslet), a marketing executive and his confidante shows a side to him that you cannot help rooting for.
The movie’s strongest suit is its screenplay, even if it has been criticised for having a few factual errors. That aside, Aaron Sorkin wrote a screenplay with dialogue that keeps you hanging on every word, even when you should not, considering the movie is supposed to be about a guy who thinks and breathes computers. Sorkin has a way with words as he has proven before with The Social Network, The American President and A Few Good Men (run and watch them if you haven’t yet, then thank me later). A script does not bring itself however, which is why Steve Jobs gets more points for having a strong cast. The last guy who played Steve Jobs in 2013 made me feel like I was being punked –it was hard to take him seriously. Fassbender on the other hand – makes you forget that you are watching fiction. Remember how much he made you hate him in 12 Years a Slave? He will get you feel all sorts of ways with this one.
You won’t get to know Steve Jobs’ life story from this movie but you will get a sense of what it must have been to be him, which is just enough to keep you interested, and entertained.
