zl1

Zulanda has penned some of the hits that are rocking the Kampala airwaves. He tells us about his career.

When did you start writing songs?
I started in 2013.

Why would you take song writing as a career?
I am deeply passionate about it. Since my childhood, I have loved words, poetry and music. I guess I just fused all of them into one.

Where did the name Zulanda come from?
It’s a nickname that was given to me by my brothers at home and somehow even our mum started using it.

What type of music do you write?
I try to diversify and challenge myself, so I write all music types. Name it and I will deliver.

What are some of the songs you have written?
Irene Ntale’s Nkubukinze, Stay With Me, Love Letter, Ono Omwana and Easy. Embeera and Kyowulira by Winnie Nwagi, Only You by Iryn Namubiru, Leila’s Hold Me and Kuuma Obudde by Lillian Mbabazi to mention but a few.

How much do you charge per song you write?
That depends on the client’s approach but least is Shs1.5m.

What inspires you to write those songs?
I’m inspired by real lifetime events, mine and those that I have witnessed.

How have you benefited from song writing?
It’s such an interesting venture since one gets drawn into many people’s experiences and thoughts and you get to meet many fascinating people who inspire and motivate you.

Instead of selling the songs you write, why don’t you sing them?
In this business, timing is a virtue and my singing style doesn’t favour some of the material I write. I also sing, but the way I write suits other musicians.

How can someone get in contact with you if they want a song?
I got a cell phone 0781663111. You can also get me at Swangz Avenue in Muyenga.

Which is your best among the songs you have written and why?
The fact is that every day I try to write something better than what I wrote yesterday, so I guess my favourite is yet to come. Just watch the space.
