Date with a celeb : Dembe FM’s Prossy Patra links up with fan

CELEB

THE LIFE OF A RADIO PRESENTER: She has been presenting Eki Love Love on Dembe FM since 2007. Prossy Patra who also happens to be singer Ragga Dee’s sister narrates her radio career to her fan Wandera.

Where do you get all those words you use on radio?
I have been doing this for seven years now. I talk out of experience and besides that; my show is interactive as people call in and we discuss several topics, so its a two-way process. I conceive my topics from people’s experiences and I also do a lot of research and reading.

Are you only good at presenting shows based on love issues?
I can present other programmes as well. I have done morning, mid-morning, afternoon and evening shows as well.

Are you in a relationship?
Yes, I’m engaged and I have a four-year-old son from that relationship.

How do you think your fiancée feels with you presenting such a programme?
Good thing is he met me when I was doing that show, so he knows exactly what he’s dealing with. Besides, everything stays on radio. I joke a lot and flirt with the callers to spice up the show, but he is used to it.

What has been the most outrageous thing a listener has done for you on radio?
I remember one day while we were still in Nakasero, a fan brought me two bunches of matooke, a sack of Irish potatoes, sugar and rice. But up to now, I don’t know who it was. He just told the receptionist to hand everything to me.

Is it true Ragga Dee is your brother?
Yes he is. Same mother and same father although we don’t paint it in people’s faces.

Had you worked at another radio station before?
Dembe is the only radio station I’ve worked for, but besides radio, I also worked for Star TV sometime back.
Why aren’t you still on TV?
The truth is that they weren’t paying.

Did you study Mass Communication?
I did Environmental Management at Makerere University but I’m on radio because of passion.

What else do you do besides radio presenting?
I’m also the music director at the station. I select all the music before it hits the airwaves.

Who is your best artiste in Uganda?
I love most of them but I put family, so Ragga Dee and Sister Slave are my best. She is my sister and an artiste who lives in the UK.

Why then didn’t you also join the music industry?
I did music but for a short time. I was a dancehall artiste and some of my songs include Galiman, Hit and Run with Sister Slave, One Minute Man with Jackie, Omulembe Gwabakyala, Put On Your Shoes and Charming, among others.

What do you hate about Ragga Dee?
He is too calm. He is one artiste who doesn’t fight back however much he’s provoked and yet I know how angry he can get.

How old are you?
(Laughs loud) I’m forever 25.

What do you like most about radio?
It gives me space to do my other stuff. I have also met several people because of my job.

Who helped you get this far?
Well I have a lot of people to thank. Moses Kayz, Ragga Dee, Messe, Bina Baby, Nyende Williams, Mandevu, Peter Kabba, Alex Mukulu, Patrick Muwawu, Aisha Namiro and my other workmates.

Wht are your top five songs at the moment?
Juicy by Goodlyfe, Kalibatanya by Juliana, Rema’s Katonotono, Gundeze by King Saha and Kigwa Leero by Bobi Wine and Nubian Li among others.
