PLOTTING COME BACK: The reggae singer has been off the radar for five years, but he says he has been in studio, writes Isaac Ssejjombwe.
You’ve been quiet since your last hit. What have you been up to?
I had taken a break to concentrate on raising my son. After he came of age, I went into a very crucial phase of testing my creativity. I have been in studio for the last five years planning for this very comeback.
Do you think it will be easy to break through the industry again since it’s been a while since your last hit single?
Unlike many people, I do not think of a comeback as a slap in the face. It’s a challenge I must take. You are either on people’s radar or you’re not and I’m not one to fear taking risks.
What is your strategy for this come -back?
I will set a new precedent in Uganda where I’ll be releasing a 10 track album each month starting with this Saturday. I have also upped my game by performing with a full live band as opposed to just doing audio play back performances like I did in the past.
Where and when will you be releasing this 10 track album?
I’ll have my maiden show this Saturday May 30 at Zion Train reggae bar In Buziga.
Don’t you think it is too ambitious to promise a 10 track album each month until the end of the year?
I have carefully prepared for this and I have recorded over 100 songs from which I’m compiling these quality albums.
Which artistes have you worked with on this project?
I have been honoured to work with some of our industry’s respected players like Bobi Wine, Buchaman, Atlas, Jamal, Peter Miles, Reef, Empress and several others.
Tell us more about this upcoming album.
My first album is called The Truth and it features both reggae and reggae dancehall.
What makes your music unique?
My musical influences, my conscious lyrics and the mix of languages. I mostly sing in Jamaican patois, English and Luganda. Also, none of my songs sounds remotely close to another. I keep testing my skill by trying out different vocal ranges.
Any last words for your fans?
I would like to thank them all for the support they have shown me over the years and I beseech them to attend my first show with a live band this Saturday.
