hustler : Carol Tusubira

hus
She studied Public Administration and Management at UCU but Tusubira decided to go into secretarial business because it’s what she desired and she says it pays well.

What exactly do you do?
I’m into secretarial work doing typing, printing, laminating, photocopying and binding.

Why then did you decide to go into this kind of business?
It’s what I wanted and besides I’m comfortable with what I’m earning.

When did you start this business?
In October 2012.

Where do you carry out this business?
I’m based at Old Kampala, Perimeter Commercial Complex, just opposite St Matia Mulumba Church.

Why not Nasser Road like other secretarial businesses?
This place is strategic, not congested like Nasser Road and easily accessible. I’m surrounded by schools like Old Kampala SSS, Citizen SS, Kampala Secondary and others. There is a church, mosque and police station, which all require secretarial services.

What are your rates?
Photocopy costs Shs100, printing and laminating costs Shs1,000, printing costs Shs500 and binding costs Shs2,000.

By the look of things, you are earning small amounts of money. Is it worth it?
Yes, it is because schools deal in quantity work. We photocopy pamphlets, not just one book.

How much did you invest in this business?
I started with a printer and a photocopy machine and they cost me Shs1.5m.

Which seasons do you make a lot of money?
Because schools are my best clients, I’m so busy during school terms but I face it rough during holidays.

How much do you make a day during schooling terms and in holidays?
I’m able to make between Shs50,000 and Shs100,000 a day during the school term and between Shs20,000 and Shs30,000 during holidays.
