Climate change is serious business, there is no denying that. But there is a way movies draw an even more sinister picture than the environmentalists tell us. The latest in showing just how bad the effects of climate change goes beyond Earth being destroyed by a storm we can survive and later rebuild our lives. Instead, it explores total destruction of the planet – did a shiver just run through your spine?
In Interstellar, for some environmental reason, Earth is a dusty place where the only crop that can grow on it is maize (they call it corn in the movie. I’ve never understood the difference). And from the looks of it, things are going to get worse.
When NASA scientist, Prof Brand (Caine) learns about a wormhole, he calls upon Cooper (Mc Conaughey), a former astronaut turned farmer to lead a team that includes Brand’s daughter, Amelia (Hathaway) on an expedition into space to find a way of saving Earth. Cooper is torn between leaving his children behind and saving humanity. For the non-science fiction buffs, wormholes are theoretical shortcuts through space –travelling through them would mean that you are not aging but the people you leave behind do, that is if you even survive it.
This is such a Christopher Nolan-like plot so you are sure you will be as entertained as you were when you watched The Following or The Dark Knight trilogy. However, Nolan’s movies tend to lack in the heartwarming department, which is an important thing to have in a movie where everything seems to be doomed – just look at how well having heart worked for Gravity. Another of its strong points is that while it is fictional, it tries to be as accurate as possible. The producers even had a science physicist on hand for consultation so science snobs shouldn’t find fault with it on the front.
