Appreciating art: It is that time of the year again where comedians and artistes come together to celebrate art, with the aim of giving back to the community through charity.
It is back and has attracted more talent. Tonight, 10 top comedians, 10 celebrated musicians and 10 delicious cakes will be lined-up in a toast to 10 years of music and comedy in Uganda.
Among acts lined up for the night are Zambia’s celebrated artiste Abel Chungu and comedian Dr Ofweneke from Kenya. Explaining the concept of marrying music with comedy, the event’s organiser, Kenneth Kimuli, alias Pablo, said by hosting popular artistes who have achieved continental fame through social and electronic media, this concert will attract revellers who enjoy both music and comedy.
He adds, “It is named so because it brings together acclaimed comedians and musicians using their craft to make a difference in Uganda. The event is also a celebration of the rich African culture through comedy, music and dance, but at the same time serves as a platform to showcase the immense talent that is a formidable force in the entertainment industry and raise funds to support charity as a way of giving back to the community.”
The fete coincides with celebrations to mark Pablo’s 10 years of stand-up comedy. He joined comedy outfit Theatre Factory that was a force to reckon with in 2004.
Five years later, he was granted the bragging rights as Uganda’s “king of comedy” after winning the Multichoice “Stand Up Uganda” competition in 2009.
For charity
It is, however, not entertainment that counts at this fete. Pablo has fused in a social cause to support the Zip-up 256 HIV/Aids prevention campaign, which aims at fighting HIV among youth through entertainment. Through the campaign, youth are encouraged to keep their zippers up.
“The proceeds from the show will help to facilitate campaigns spreading information about HIV/Aids to teenagers and also give handy support through peer-to-peer interaction, live testimonies and mentorship from role models. The aim is to create positivity; optimism and help teenagers make the right choices,” Pablo explains.
The show kicks off at 7:33pm. The organiser assures that this is a show that can be attended by the whole family since it will be clean and the music fresh. Tickets are available at all PayWay machines, Kampala Serena Hotel, The Sound Cup, National Theatre and Power FM/Watoto Church.
The Comedy Meets Music fete took place at the same venue last year. It featured Zambian gospel artiste Pompi, comedians Bob Ambrose and Daniel Omara as well as Karen Hasahya Kimuli, wife to Pablo, alongside her Band Bracha.
