What do you do when you want to put the groove back in your marriage? Make a sex tape, of course. And not just any sex tape, everyone is doing that now. Instead, try out every move listed in a sex manual.
This is what must have been going through Jay (Segel) and Annie’s (Diaz) minds when they decide to make the titular sex tape.
The recording is for their eyes only and is meant to be deleted. But technology blows their plans apart when Jay taps sync file instead of delete. The file is synced to all the iPads the couple gifted several people. What follows are several theatrics and awkwardness as the couple tries to delete the file before their friends and family open it. Then there is also the threat of it being uploaded onto a porn site, and the sex tape creates more excitement than the couple intended.
These are the makings of a comedy, especially when you pair Diaz and Segel. And I’m sure there are many laughs. It is also a topic that resonates with the times, what with people leaking sex tapes on social media. However, the movie has received mostly bad reviews from film critics in the US.
Some have described it as a movie that failed to reach its comic potential while others have said it is just a good advert for the iPad. But that’s the thing, several movies don’t live up to critics’ expectations internationally but manage to be popular here. This might be one of those movies.
