Uganda’s biggest female gospel artiste Judith Babirye held her Webale concert over the weekend. She belted out her hits like Beera Nange, Nzijukira, Alibawo, Omusaayi Gwa Yesu, and Number One, among others.
She also led a praise and worship session that got people absorbed in a spiritual moments as they lifted their hands in praise. After taking a short break, Babirye returned and did songs like Favour before she asked the crowd to choose songs they wanted her to sing.
And when the crowd roared Maria in unison, she was not about to grant them their wish. Maria is Babirye’s 2010 hit, which she wrote at the height of her marriage woes. In the song, she urges married women to persevere in troubled marriages for the sake of their children.
Babirye, who broke up with her husband shortly after releasing the song, avoided singing it for reasons best known to her. However, a section of the showgoers thought she would be contradicting herself if she had performed the song; considering she didn’t practice what she preached.
She performed songs like Embaga, Omuliro and Wanjagala but not Maria!
