KS Alpha, real names Suleiman Kamulegeya meets his number one fan Sarah Nduga, a social activist and businesswoman at his office in Industrial Area.
Hi Alpha. How have you found the music industry ever since you joined?
Uh, well, like any other business, it’s a bumpy road with good and bad times. But the good times outweigh the bad ones and that is why I’m still going.
What are your best moments so far?
My ambitions are big and I haven’t yet gotten there. But when I travel outside Uganda, I keep the moments fresh in my mind. My other special moments are when I perform for high school students because they constitute the biggest number of my fan base.
What else do you do apart from singing?
I’m also into information technology. I’m a web programmer and in the final steps of opening up a clothing line which I will name Yes I’m African.
What plans do you have for us in 2014?
I’m actually adjusting myself a little. My music has to grow with me and I’m working on my latest music project, an acoustic reggae song with Midundo. My charity work “Stay in school with music and basketball” is also underway. This is all about educating the youth that education is more important than anything else. You can be successful through your talent, but put school first. I get artistes and basketballers to visit schools as role models. So far, we have visited Crane High School, St Michael and other schools.
What is your best hobby?
I play basketball and it’s a routine. I train with City Oilers and I’m also a big football fan supporting Liverpool.
Are you married?
Not yet but I’m dating someone special. I intend to get married three years from now.
Where do you see the music industry five years from now?
The industry will be in a better place because some of us have been there when the industry was young. We used to have cassettes but these days you have Ugandan artistes singing with Jamaicans as well as Americans.
Do you have mentors in the industry?
Yes I do and not only in the music industry alone but other circles like in the sports world and politics. I consider Philly Lutaaya the greatest musician Uganda has ever had, Madoxx Ssematimba, John Legend, Bounty Killer, Tarrus Riley and Common are the other guys I look up to.
What do you consider in a woman?
Intelligence first, then she has to be God fearing and hardworking as well. Beauty and the rest follow.
Who do you consider as very important in your life?
My mother. She raised me in the most appropriate way that up to now I thank God she’s still there.
Tell me about your family background?
I was born to Mr Moses Kasita and Ms Janet Namugambe. I’m their only child, but I have step brothers and sisters.
How many albums do you have?
I have three albums, I’m In Love, Selekta and my recent one Yes I’m African.
