Hip hop artiste Don MC meets his fan, Samuel Magandaazi, a car dealer in town.
Briefly tell me about yourself?
My name is Donald Rugambwa Rutaisire. I’m a rapper, record producer and song writer.
Why did you decide to use the name (Don MC)?
I decided to call myself Don MC because I’m lyrically a “Don”. It means I’m gifted musically. I have everything it takes when it comes to lyrics.
Why did you go for a less recognised style of music?
I believe hip hop was the only way I could express my feelings. It was my first love and I believe I’m good at it. I’m I not?
Yes you are. Why would a young man like you go for music?
I do music because just like any other career, trying to breakthrough the music business or make a living as a musician requires hard work, dedication and patience. It also depends on the talent one has. If you are talented enough, then it is a worthy career.
I haven’t failed to notice that a big percentage of artistes break out from different groups or crews. So which crew do you come from?
I belong to 2Bad Entertainment, which I founded a few years back to help not only me but talented upcoming artistes who want to make a career out of music.
Are you surviving on only music?
Ahhhhh let me see … I’m a rally driver and sometimes I hawk grasshoppers … Hehehe, just joking. But seriously, at the moment, I’m all about music.
What inspires you to do the kind of music you do?
Life and feelings are the biggest inspiration one can have, even listening to a lot of music helps me. But if I need to write my own music, the inspiration is me. I start writing from just a simple idea, which builds to something even bigger.
For how long have you been in the music industry?
It’s now four years.
Among the artistes in Uganda, who is your best in this business?
I love all Ugandan artistes and their music because they all contribute to the growth of this industry.
Why do you have that hairstyle, the bald head with a pony tail?
It’s my trade mark.
Every artiste has that one song he/she does from the heart and soul. What is your best?
Yes Yes is my best song because it’s a true story.
How much do you charge to perform at a concert or show?
It depends on the place, the show and the person behind it. When it comes to schools, I charge Shs800,000. For shows or concerts around town, I charge Shs1.5m and upcountry shows go for Shs3m.
Do you record from a particular studio or you work with many studios?
I go to several studios for variety. I have recorded in Swangz Avenue, Buddies, Badi Music and South Cyde.
What projects are you working on?
I’m working on having collabos with a number of great artistes like Wyre, Bebe Cool, Nazizi but my latest tracks are Ssika and My Gal, on which I feature Reef HD. The video is out too.
What is your view about the anti-pornograpy law?
