It is been billed to be one of the strongest movies this year, even as we are only starting it. Already the film has been nominated for nine Oscars, including best picture and best director.
12 Years A Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-civil war United States, Solomon Northup, a role played by British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, is abducted from New York and sold into slavery.
As a slave, he faces a lot of brutality from his so-called “white owners” in Louisiana as he works on plantations but amidst all this Solomon struggles to stay alive and to retain his pride.
Surprising, along the way, he is shown some unexpected kindness from someone who does not believe in this inhumane act. This is during his 12th year of slavery. He meets a Canadian abolitionist and from that point on his life changes.
This movie is an adaptation of the 1853 memoir of the same name – 12 Years A Slave.
