Yolele, Christmas is here – Jaq Deweyi

JaqMay be one day, we will have a really good collection of local Christmas carols, in the place of the foreign ones. And no, this is not to say we are tired of the foreign carols; they are, after all, the first carols we knew.
If we finally get to that pedestal, KFM radio presenter, Jaq Deweyi, just may be one of the artistes to stand on that list. In a mixed English-Lumasaaba effort, Jaq gives a reason to wear the face of cheer as the season that celebrates the birth of Christ.
And yes, it is very African, true to the distinct musical definitions of sound from the Mount Elgon region, especially as heard in the drum combinations. And yet it is quite urban and contemporary too, making it very accessible to the modern day listener.
The song speaks about the joy and excitement of the season, and how our society typically passes these events: sweeping the roads in the village, slaughtering all animals in sight, on top of gifts and presents for loved ones and visiting church for the first time in the year.
It is a song that easily relates with the times, and passes as a fitting Christmas carol.
