What? You have never heard of a rapper called Awadi? Well, that’s why Sqoop is here; let’s bring you up to speed. Didier Awadi is a Senegalese rapper and the most visible figure of Francophone West African Hip hop. Awadi has toured around the world contributing to the international popularity of Hip hop Galsen, Senegal’s version of the rap music genre. Awadi participates in the structuring of the musical sector in Senegal through his label, recording studio, and rehearsal space, Studio Sankara.
Awadi is not to the level of P Square but he is surely a big name in world music! But that’s not the story, the story is that Awadi who is currently holding several shows in France, linked up with our very own Joel Sebunjo and the two have a duet coming up. Sebunjo, an instrumentalist and one of the leading World Music artistes in East Africa is also well travelled and is currently on tour in France. The Ugandan, known for his masterly of the Western African instrument the Kora recently won the French Visa pour la creation Award, that saw him relocate to France to further his music career for the next few months.
Sebunjo is working on a song dubbed African Dream on which he features Awadi!
“In the song, we urge Africans to believe in their continent, East-West Africa unity, Africans investing; it’s all about everything that can make Africans proud,” Sebunjo told us. Sebunjo and Awadi recorded at Universal Music-France, and the video will be shot in both Uganda & Dakar-Senegal, in the coming months!
Thanks for loving home and you are always welcome home!
