The music video :Criminal swag – Young Zee

Young Zee

Young Zee

No one can confirm this, but this video is believed to have cost over Shs75m to make. Filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa, it starts with Young Zee checking the time and getting restless as he awaits the arrival of his female friend, at a bowling centre.

Filmed by Tough Sunday, who have also worked on videos for Navio and Radio and Weasel, the video is perfect when it comes to lighting. The artificial lights are well regulated and they don’t blind out the two main characters despite the fact that it’s a dark area.

There is nothing criminal about the two teenagers in the video, but it tries to imply that they are too “swagged up” it’s criminal. Young Zee’s vintage glasses and the way he wears his cap, titled to one side, tries to portray the swag the song is talking about.

There are only two characters in the video and at some point one gets the feeling of a lacking connection between Young Zee and the girl. There only a few times the two connect and one of the best moments is when the two sip juice from the same glass.

The video was on point with great colour and editing, but it was a bit monotonous with Young Zee continuously rapping  in front of a background that had the lit blue signage.

It is not an extraordinary video with a wow factor except for some of the shots of Young Zee besides a yellow vintage car that was parked in front of the bowling centre. One gets the feeling that most of the Shs75m spent on the video was on travel and accommodation costs to Johannesburg for Young Zee and his team, as the video was shot at just a bowling alley. But all in all, the video portrays the swag it talks about, after all flying to South Africa just to shoot a video is “criminal swag” itself.
