The ninth annual Channel O awards are on tomorrow in South Africa. Uganda is well represented with Keko, Navio, Maurice Kirya and Toniks nominated in different categories.
Keko is vying for the Most Gifted Female video award for her Make You Dance that features Kenya’s Madtraxx. She is facing competition from Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage and Mo Cheddah, South Africa’s Zahara and Mozambique’s Lizha James.
Keko (Make You Dance) and Navio (One and Only) are locking horns in the Most Gifted East African video category with other nominees being Kenya’s Camp Mulla (Party Don’t Stop), Tanzania’s A.Y ft. Sauti Sol (I Don’t Wanna Be Alone) and Somalia’s K’naan ft. Nas (Nothing to Lose).
Keko brought home the Most Gifted East African video award for her song How We Do (Remix) with the Good Lyfe duo last year and she is only a few hours away from knowing if she will win again.
Maurice Kirya’s I Don’t Wanna Fight is nominated in the Most Gifted Afro-Pop video category competing with fellow Ugandan Toniks who features on Namibian duo Gal Level’s Money.
This year’s awards will be hosted by Nigerian superstar, Ice Prince of the Oleku fame and South African ‘it girl’ Bonang Matheba. The star-studded line-up of performers includes Nigerian Ice Prince, Mo Cheddah and Davido. Also set to set the stages ablaze are other African stars Alaska, Thebe, Dr. Malinga, Oskido, Khuli Chana, Black Motion, DJ Zinhle and Mi Casa.
The awards will be broadcast live on GOtv’s channel 70 at 9pm tomorrow.
