This was director Yash Chopra’s last work before he met his death, three weeks before the release of his last film. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is the title of the movie which is translated to mean Till my last breath.
The cast is made up of of big Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan who is referred to the the King
of Bollywood, plus Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma. In one world Samar Anand, played by
Shahrukh Khan is a soldier on a task to defuse a bomb and on the other side of the world,
Akira Rai, played by Anushka Sharma, is taking time off her new assignment as a Discovery
Channel intern and is out to win a bet. So she dives into the cold river in Ladakh.
The incidental meeting of the two is right in the river where Akira fails to swim due to the cold waters and Samar happens to be her rescuer. He goes on to play gentleman and offers her his jacket to warm her. Akira, offended by his late reaction, starts yelling at him. After reaching her hotel, she finds a diary which falls from his jacket’s pocket. Curious, she starts reading it. A love story is built from thereon.
The movie has enjoyed largely positive reviews owing to the commendable job by fallen
director Chopra. English film critic Simon Foster says that Chopra lives up to his reputation as India’s King of Romantic Cinema with Jab Tak Hai Jaan. “Grand cinematic work boasting all the pros and cons of the genre…” he writes.Digital Spy’s (entertainment website) Priya Joshi summarises the movie as, “Yash Chopra’s poignant ode to love.” He adds, “Nobody does romance quite like Yash Chopra or Shah Rukh Khan. Whether it’s his cool charisma in the earlier, carefree incarnation, or the brooding intensity of the Byronic figure, Khan is endlessly watchable,” he notes. This could be a good romantic movie to watch this weekend, and you need to know it has subtitles.
