You remember Sarah Zawedde, don’t you? It is true she has not been exactly up-in-your-face for a while now. But no, it is not true that she had stopped singing. For those who remember the song Kambere Nawe, and maybe Lwaki Onondola, her new song, Embeera Zo, will deviate quite a bit from that line of Ragga to a more Afro-Pop sound, the kind of thing that Angela Kalule and Maureen Nantume have become known for doing. And thus, if you are not into that kind of music, this song may not exactly be your cup of tea.
The song is about love and romance – (a simple question there, why do musicians always want to sing about love? Isn’t there anything else to sing about, you know, like a Ugandan flying to Mars in a space ship one day? Anything but love!) It is based on the very way a love struck girl dots on her lover. Zawedde sings about her crush in the song, whose ways have swept her off her feet into complete surrender, even promising to guard him more than she would do for the Pope.
It is not the best that has come from Sarah Zawedde, with Ndi Mukazi and Kambere Nawe still holding that torch. This kind of song will not trigger your nerves into the thrill of wanting to dance away. It is the more easy-going, relaxed, feel good Luganda song for the tuned lover’s ear.
