When did you realise you could make films?
I started in February 2008, but it was my childhood dream. l used to watch films in cinema halls when I was growing up, that’s where my passion for filmmaking was nurtured. My first film was titled Abefere B’ekibuga and it showed on TV. I have so far shot over five films with the last one titled 11th July – Ekikangabwa, which I will be premiering in August.

How much were you worth when you started?
I had my own camera and studio, with about Shs300,000 in cash, which was to cater for unforeseen costs and rentals for things like locations, costumes and props. It was not easy to start and capital was limited but with God and friends who believed in what I wanted to do, we did it.

What is the budget for an average movie?
The budget is at least 10m for a quality film. Although most films in Uganda cost less, you can still make a nice movie for less as long as you have enough experience.

What lacks in the industry in Uganda?
The craft is poorly marketed because some people don’t get to know when a new movie is out. There are few sponsors and HD cameras are very expensive in Uganda and so are good computers. Besides most films revolve around the same themes like family, love and witchcraft.

What have you achieved from the business?
Getting friends and becoming known and being able to set up my studios here in Kasubi.
