The Track: Shake your Shankolo – Mya Baganda

Mya Baganda

What the chicken bones is going on here! What or who the deuce is Shankolo? And why are we supposed to shake it anyway? And what is this Shanko-style? And since when has it been around? Oh, Mya, you could as well just have wished us a nervous musical breakdown.

This is bewildering stuff, and not in a very humorous way, I am afraid. Shake Your Shankolo is in that league of bizarre songs, like that Nigerian song commonly known as Gologo, except that it probably has a real meaning in whichever local dialect it’s drawn from. But the closest that Shake Your Shankolo comes to is that piece of kindergarten gibberish, shokolokobangoshay, which you sang out in countryside nursery schools, back in the 1980s.

The song says nothing; it’s just a brunette’s voice going on and on about shaking the shankolo, to no tangible end. She even has the guts to boast in the song that the song is a hit, even before we can judge, such false self-confidence.

In all fairness, it’s got an excitable dance beat…it sounds all fired up and excited, just roaring to dash off to the dance-floor, where it will no doubt, find its only set of true fans.
