Chaos as People Power, family clash over Ziggy Wine’s body

Ziggy Wine died Sunday night at Mulago hospital

There has been a series of clashes among People Power supporters, residents of Ganda in Nansana Municipality and the family of musician Michael Kalinda, also known as Ziggy Wyne.

The artiste died on Sunday evening, days after he was allegedly dumped at Mulago Hospital by unknown people after they maimed him. At the time of his admission, he had reportedly been tortured, his fingers chopped, his left eye plucked out and had visible burns all over his body.

His body was taken to Ganda on Monday evening for a vigil, as soon as it was released from the City mortuary. However, a faction of distant relatives emerged claiming that the vigil and burial were planned to take place in Bushenyi and not in Ganda.

The Kampala group, comprising a few relatives and supporters of the People Power pressure group claimed that the deceased would be buried in Bukoto, where his brother and mother were laid to rest a few years ago.

But the team from Bushenyi accused the other groups of plotting to grab the deceased’s property, a development which evoked anger and resulted in a fight between the two sides.

Amid tensions, the two factions were convinced to hold a meeting to resolve their differences. Mr Alex Waiswa who chaired the meeting said they agreed that the body remains in Ganda to enable his neighbours and friends pay tribute to him after which it will be taken to Bushenyi for burial.

Ziggy Wyne had not risen to national fame as much as his counterparts in the Kamwokya based Fire Base Crew, but Ms Immaculate Nalwadda, a sister to deceased, described him as focused and hardworking.

She said that her brother had aspirations of becoming an artist at 12-years and sooner than later he started hanging around with Robert Kyagulanyi, who had inspired him. She noted that Ziggy attained a diploma in Information Technology after which he opened a workshop around Nakulabye dealing in electronics and repair before joining Fire Base Crew.

Mr Martin Lubowa, friend to the deceased remembers him as a calm person. Kalinda is survived by a three-year-old boy and a pregnant wife identified as Hilda.
